Spectacular Insight into the Life of a Tea Seed

A Sensational Day in the Life of a Tea Seed

Hanging Around

After the flower has been visited by a bee with a penchant for Camellia Sinensis, a small bulb starts to build. This, in turn, will grow into a container with green skin first and brown skin at a later stage, which comprises three seeds. They hang around until the container breaks open, and if the seeds happen to fall onto fertile grounds in a suitable climate, then a little mirarcle will happen.

Split Down the Middle

The two-way miracle happens in the next step: If the seed is happy with the situation and decides to hatch, it will almost always manage to crack the nut into two halves. Next, it develops two sprouts, one of which will travel downwards and build the roots, while the other shoots pretty straight upwards to form the basis of the new tree.

No Wasting Any of the Goodies

The miracle does not quite end with the new shoot coming out and the nut split. The plant does not waste any of the energy and nutrients it has put such an effort into compacting into a nut, let alone would it throw away 50%. Instead, a close look reveals that even though the nut is split into two parts, both parts are still connected to the new shoot. It’s quite impressive !
